Four dead as villagers clash between police over Facebook post
At least four people have died and 50 others are injured in clashes between police and locals in Bhola's Borhanuddin.
The violence erupted around 10:45 am on Sunday after locals gathered for a meeting over a Facebook post which allegedly hurts religious sentiments.
Two bullet-ridden bodies were taken to the Upazila Health Complex, said its resident physician Md Shahin.
Police had to fire rubber bullets to disperse the protesters, reports our correspondent from Jhalakathi.
Contacted, Superintendent of Police in Bhalo, Sorkar Md Kaiser confirmed the deaths of people and said their identities could not be known.
According to witnesses, the clash ensued around 11:30am when a group of people brought out a procession in Borhanuddin Bazar protesting a Facebook post of a youth from Hindu community, which they found to have been hurtful to religious sentiments.
At one stage, the protesters became violent, prompting the law-enforcers to get into action.
On information, a team of Border Guard Bangladesh was heading towards the spot via helicopter to tackle the situation.
“Additional law enforcers were sent to the spot after the unexpected incident took place. We will carry out an inquiry and take steps afterwards,” Deputy Inspector General of Barishal Range Police Shafiqul Islam told reporters.
